Bear incidents are closer to home than you might think.
Bear incidents are closer to home than you might think. Someone was injured by a bear a few hours after I walked the same spot. That was this year, 2025. In popular areas with people around the risk may be lower, but in quieter bear country it's tense. Bears deliberately attacking people may be rare, but a sudden encounter is frightening. While walking, I think you need to make noise and make it clear that humans are present.
Overnight you need to be even more careful. There are other animals too. Badgers and raccoon dogs are risky as well; you never know what diseases they carry. Keeping food or scented rubbish inside the tent makes me very uneasy. At night it's better to store food and anything with a smell well away from camp so bears and other animals aren't drawn in. For peace of mind and safety, a bear canister is a very effective tool.
