The OLYMPUS 275, rebuilt in a HILO cut for deeper days in the mountains

The ALTRA OLYMPUS 275 HILO is a trail shoe built on the OLYMPUS 275 — a model focused on cushioning and trail grip — and finished in a HILO cut that wraps up around the ankle.

It is designed for trail running, but also for hiking and mountaineering. It combines an Altra EGO™ MAX midsole with a 33mm stack height, a Vibram® Megagrip with TractionLug™ outsole, and a durability-focused MATRYX® one-piece woven upper.

It shares its basic direction with the low-cut OLYMPUS 275 we already carry, while the ankle-wrapping construction and the scree sleeve are what set the HILO apart. From runnable trail to long days walking rocky, sandy, gravelly mountain paths, it is an option for anyone who wants one shoe to cover a wide range.

Thick cushioning, made lighter and softer

The midsole uses Altra EGO™ MAX. ALTRA states it is 15% lighter and 10% softer than the previous model.

The stack height is 33mm — a thick cushioning setup made with long trail runs and hikes in mind, where the soles of your feet take impact hour after hour.

The drop, meanwhile, is ALTRA's signature 0mm. With no height difference between heel and forefoot, the balance is built around a natural stride.

Vibram® Megagrip and TractionLug™ to hold the ground

The outsole is Vibram® Megagrip with TractionLug™.

It pairs Vibram® Megagrip, which is intended to hold grip across a range of conditions — not only dry dirt but wet surfaces too — with TractionLug™ to raise traction.

Rather than targeting easy, runnable trail alone, this outsole setup also takes in mountain trails where rock, dirt and wet ground are mixed together.

A MATRYX® upper built for rock and abrasion

The upper uses a MATRYX® one-piece woven upper. It emphasises high tear strength and durability, and handles environments where the sides of the shoe rub against rock and trail.

Around the ankle there is also a scree sleeve that acts like a gaiter, built to keep sand and small stones from working their way inside the shoe.

With low-cut trail running shoes, sand and grit can get in around the ankle. On long days out and on rough trail, cutting down that kind of small intrusion is one reason to choose the HILO.

Original FootShape™ — the roomiest in ALTRA's range

The FootShape™ is "Original". Even within ALTRA's line-up it allows generous forefoot space, designed so your toes can spread naturally.

It is a shape that leaves room in the forefoot even when your feet swell over long hours of running or walking. There is room through the midfoot as well, for a fit that does not tighten down on the foot more than it needs to.

A shoe that doesn't decide between running and walking

The OLYMPUS 275 HILO is not a model limited to being either a pure trail running shoe or mountaineering footwear.

Running long trail on that cushioning. Moving through a full day in the mountains where runnable sections and walking sections are mixed. Or hiking and climbing while keeping some lightness underfoot. It is a setup that works well in mountains where the line between running and walking is blurred.

It is also worth considering if you like the thick cushioning and grip of the OLYMPUS 275 and want something that covers a little more of the ankle.
