Design

This shirt was created with a basic design in mind that blends naturally into everyday life. It features a simple, versatile style without excessive decoration, making it easy to wear in a variety of situations.

The silhouette has a relaxed shape that is just the right distance from the body. We have pursued an exquisite balance that prioritizes ease of movement without looking sloppy. This means that you can wear it for long periods of time without feeling stressed, and you can stay comfortable.

The shirt has a simple design, but attention has been paid to the details.

Rounded Edges

Since it is susceptible to wear, we designed it to eliminate as many sharp points as possible.

In order to prevent wear, we used small round shapes in these areas. Normally, these areas are finished with sharp angles, which makes them more susceptible to wear and tear and makes fraying more noticeable. By incorporating small round shapes, we aimed to create a design that reduces damage from wear and allows the product to remain beautiful for a long period of time.

However, this small, round shape requires advanced sewing techniques. The stitch pitch must be set finely and there is an increased amount of manual work required to follow the curves, making it an extremely delicate and difficult process for the craftsman. Nevertheless, we chose this shape in pursuit of a beautiful and durable finish.

Food

The biggest feature of this product is the hood.

Warmth: When hiking, you may be exposed to cold temperatures and strong winds. Wearing a hood increases the warmth around your head and neck, preventing your body temperature from dropping.

Windproof and rainproof: When hiking, you may encounter sudden rain or wind. The hood securely covers your head and neck, protecting you from the wind and rain. The material is water-repellent, so it can withstand light rain.

UV protection: When hiking in the high mountains, UV rays can be strong. Wearing a hood protects the skin around your head and neck from direct UV rays. Made from a material with UV protection, it provides excellent UV protection.

- Breathability: This material is highly breathable, reducing stuffiness around the head when the hood is worn, supporting comfortable hiking.

We deliberately chose a very simple design for the hood. This is because we wanted this shirt to have a presence as a "shirt," not a so-called "shell." As we don't envision situations where the hood will be used frequently, we felt that a complex design or structure was not necessary.

Rather, we wanted the hood to have the role of being "quickly usable in an emergency" and "a discreet presence in everyday life." By eliminating unnecessary details, the hood does not impair the lightness of the entire shirt, and does not stand out too much.

This simplicity is one of the charms of the Hooded Long Sleeve Shirt. It doesn't get in the way in any situation, yet it's useful when you need it. We've strived for that perfect balance.

We made detailed adjustments to the size of the hood, striving for an exquisite balance that fits comfortably around the back and neck when not wearing it, yet doesn't feel too restrictive when wearing it. If it's too small, it loses functionality, and if it's too big, it ruins the overall silhouette. For this reason, we proceeded with the design, searching for a middle ground that balances appearance and practicality.

This sizing allows us to create a hood that blends naturally into any situation without compromising the overall impression of the shirt. For example, when worn on a windy day or in light rain, it functions well, but when not worn, it doesn't make an unnecessary presence and maintains the shirt's original simplicity. This exquisite balance of "not too small, not too big" makes it unobtrusive and easy to use.

The hood string is made of the same fabric, rather than using materials like elastic cord or rope. This choice was made to maintain the uniformity of the entire shirt while creating a soft and light appearance. By blending naturally with the overall design of the hood and not standing out too much, we have devised a way to not detract from the simple impression of the shirt.

If you want to narrow the hood opening, you can easily adjust it by simply pulling the string. If you want it to be more secure, just tie the string to adjust it. We stuck to this simplicity because we wanted the hood to be positioned as a "feature that is useful only when necessary." By providing excessive adjustment capabilities, we were able to avoid the hood being too assertive and maintain the overall lightness.

When you tighten the strings without wearing the hood, the entire hood changes shape and takes on a unique look. This adjustment prevents the hood from flapping in the wind and gives it a neater appearance. It also provides a comfortable fit around the neck, providing a little extra warmth.

This small added feature gives you peace of mind on windy days when hiking or around town.

Sleeves with underarm movement

The armholes are designed to be wide for ease of movement. By ensuring sufficient range of motion at the armpits (bottom) when raising your arms, you can move comfortably and without stress.

This design is made with outdoor activities in mind, as it prevents the shirt from being pulled up and restrictive, even when you need to move your arms widely, such as when taking items in and out of a backpack or using poles on a steep uphill climb.

The roomy armholes are also extremely convenient for layering. From a light base layer to a slightly thicker winter coat, you can layer a variety of items, making this shirt useful across a wide range of seasons. Attention to detail in the design makes this shirt comfortable.

Folded seam

All seams are made with a flat-felled stitch. A flat-felled stitch is a method of folding the edge of the fabric inward and sewing it together, resulting in a finished product where the edge of the fabric is not visible, as shown in the image above. This sewing method has the advantage of not only looking beautiful, but also being stronger, as the seam is not exposed.

However, the folded seam is very time-consuming. Because it involves folding the fabric, it requires high skill and careful sewing. However, we chose this method because we wanted to create a strong, long-lasting finish.

Using a serger to process seams is efficient, but because the thread is exposed, there is a risk of it becoming unraveled if it gets caught on a fingernail, etc. Therefore, by using a folded flat stitch, we can prevent this problem and improve durability.

All buttons are made of resin snap buttons (YKK PLANCER®). This choice prevents problems such as buttons being lost due to thread breakage, which is common with regular sewn-on buttons. The structure of the snap button also allows for smooth opening and closing, making it easy to wear and remove frequently.

This type of button is also highly durable, making it safe for outdoor use.

hanger loop

The back yoke has a hanger loop, a traditional shirt detail that may not be used much in everyday life, but is extremely useful when hiking.

For example, when taking a break at a tent site or on a trail, you can quickly hang your shirt on a branch or hook, which is a convenient feature unique to the outdoors.It can also be used to dry a wet shirt or temporarily attach it to the outside of your pack, and is useful in a variety of situations.

This product uses COOL DOTS®, a 4-way stretch material that stretches both vertically and horizontally. COOL DOTS® is a high-performance material made of 100% polyester with countless tiny air holes, developed by Komatsu Matere Co., Ltd. This material is characterized by its excellent stretchability and breathability.

Its excellent stretchability allows it to flexibly accommodate any movement, reducing stress when worn. It naturally conforms to your body's movements, ensuring comfort, even during sudden hikes or active daily activities. Furthermore, the fine air holes provide excellent breathability, preventing stuffiness and keeping you cool even when worn for long periods of time. You can stay comfortable even in the summer or during high-intensity activities.

Breathable and water-repellent

This shirt has a special weaving method that creates countless tiny holes (micropores) in the fabric, providing excellent breathability. This technology allows air to flow efficiently from the inside of the shirt, reducing stuffiness and keeping you comfortable at all times.

Furthermore, the micro-hole design is designed to reduce transparency when worn. Usually, prioritizing breathability results in a thinner fabric, which can make the material more see-through, but this shirt balances visual security with functionality. It provides the breathability you need when hiking or exercising, without sacrificing comfort or style.

Anti-static measures

Special discharge tape is sewn into the garment to suppress static electricity caused by electrical buildup, which can easily occur with clothing made from thin synthetic fibers (such as nylon or polyester).

Discharge tape was developed to reduce the electrostatic charge that has adverse effects on the human body. Discharge tape does not prevent static electricity, but reduces the electrostatic charge by discharging, preventing the discomfort caused by static electricity.
Wearing it will not cause any problems to devices such as mobile phones and computers, and it also has the effect of keeping pollen and dust away from the surrounding area while discharging.

The discharge tape is cut into 2cm chips and sewn into 4 places: 1) inside the cuffs of both sleeves, and 2) at the bottom of both sides. Because it is sewn into the seam allowance, the discharge tape is not visible.

The sketch is a diagram that shows the state of electrons that generate static electricity when no discharge tape is used.
The fabric becomes negatively charged, and when it comes into contact with positive electricity in the air, a static electricity bursts forth.

The factory that produces RIDGE MOUNTAIN GEAR shirts is Fashion Kobo Kuroishi Ltd.

Fashion Workshop Kuroishi is a factory located in Kuroishi City, Aomori Prefecture, with around 50 employees. It was established in 2003.

This factory specializes in sewing shirts, and produces shirts for well-known domestic manufacturers throughout the year, producing around 60,000 shirts per year.

Each factory has its own characteristics, with some specializing in shirts, some in pants, and others specializing in cut and sew items.

As the saying goes, "leave it to the experts," so we leave each item to the factories that specialize in it.
Conversely, they often point out things that we as a manufacturer have not noticed, which can lead to improvements in quality.

I love making things, and of course I love making them myself, but I also love production sites like this.
We are sometimes asked, "Does sewing in a factory mean that everything is left to machines?", but that is not the case. Even today, there are many processes that go into the completion of a product, and many people are involved in these processes.

President Watanabe-san is on the shop floor every day, working with his hands, operating the sewing machine and ironing.
On this day, we were able to talk briefly with them in between producing RIDGE MOUNTAIN GEAR products.

Anyone who has held our product in their hands will be able to see for themselves that the quality of the stitching is second to none.
