A ridge walk in the highlands in summer feels like a special place for any hiker. A clear, unobstructed blue sky stretches out before you, and a gentle breeze caresses your cheeks. Countless small flowers bloom at your feet, and the vibrant mountain ridges stretch out in the distance. The magnificent panorama will take your breath away. Surrounded by such a magnificent view, your body and mind will feel lighter, and you will experience a moment of blissful realization that "just being here is enough."

However, during this luxurious time, one worry always lingered in the back of my mind: sunburn on my ears. After several days of walking along the ridge, the edges of my ears were constantly exposed to the intense UV rays, and they would always burn bright red, and by the time I got back down the mountain, the skin would peel off. Not only was it painful, but the subsequent inconvenience and changes in appearance were also a concern. I would always end up regretting it, thinking, "Oh no, here I go again."

Of course, I tried various solutions. I meticulously reapplied sunscreen to my ears, tried adding a bandana or neck gaiter under my cap, etc. But these solutions always had some kind of problem. They would get too hot or slip off, and eventually I would sacrifice comfort, so I naturally stopped using them. But still, the day never came when I was free from the discomfort of burning ears.

The Enough Hat was born from a simple wish: "I want a hat that's simpler and provides more natural ear protection." This hat was designed by reflecting on my own experiences as a hiker. It's based on RIDGE MOUNTAIN GEAR's classic Basic Cap, and features a brim of just the right length to fully cover the ears. It strikes the perfect balance between providing excellent protection from the sun and not obstructing your view.

We paid particular attention to the design, aiming for a minimalist look that is not unnecessarily large. This versatile piece can be used comfortably not only to protect from the strong sunlight at high altitudes, but also for hiking in low altitudes and as a sunshade in urban areas. The material is highly breathable and quick-drying, so it is comfortable and won't get stuffy even when hiking in the mountains in the sweaty summer. Now you can fully enjoy the scenery and breeze without worrying about sunburn on your ears.

This hat was born from the desire to solve the small problem of sunburned ears. However, looking back now, I feel that this "small problem" is a common issue faced by many hikers. With the "Enough Hat," hiking in the sun becomes even more enjoyable. This is the thought that I put into this hat.

Design

The biggest feature of the Enough Hat is the unique shape of its brim. While most hat brims are uniformly open on all four sides, the Enough Hat breaks this convention by allowing the brim to be precisely adjusted in three places: the front, sides, and back.

The front brim is designed at an exquisite angle to ensure visibility while blocking the sun. This allows you to check the terrain and see your feet without getting in the way while hiking. Meanwhile, the side brims are shaped to cover the ears, providing ample coverage to protect them from particularly strong UV rays. This design protects hikers from sunburn on their ears. The rear brim also subtly covers the neck, reducing sunlight reflections and UV rays from behind when walking on mountain trails.

This design is the epitome of mountain experience. Rather than simply spreading the hat evenly, the Enough Hat was created with the goal of fitting the hat at just the right angle to the necessary areas. This shape not only dramatically improves functionality in the mountains, but also creates a smart appearance that fits seamlessly in the city.

The shape of the brim is one answer to the question, "What do you need to be comfortable in nature?"

Another appealing feature of the Enough Hat is its versatility, allowing it to be worn in a variety of ways depending on the occasion or situation. This hat not only protects against UV rays, but can also be freely adapted to suit the wearer's style and purpose.

For example, if you want to ensure a wide field of vision on a dim or cloudy day, or when walking along a ridge, we recommend slightly raising the front brim. This style reduces shadows covering your face and widens your field of vision. It's extremely useful when enjoying distant scenery on the trail or when you want to clearly see the path under your feet. Raising the front brim also gives the hat a lighter, more airy look, making it convenient for changing up your look.

One way to enjoy the Enough Hat is to adjust the back of the brim to create a variety of looks. By slightly raising the back brim, the entire hat will appear more compact, allowing you to enjoy a light and airy style similar to a regular cap.

The size can be easily adjusted by pulling the plastic tab at the back to tighten the elastic. This adjustment feature improves the fit when worn and ensures a stable fit even in windy environments. This is particularly effective in outdoor situations where strong winds are expected, such as on mountaintops or ridges.

Material

The main body is made from Toray's Stunner®, a 100% nylon material that is water-repellent, windproof, and highly breathable. This high-performance material provides excellent protection from the elements while reducing sweat and discomfort, ensuring a comfortable fit.

The greatest feature of Stunner® is its excellent durable water-repellent properties. It can withstand light rain as well as sudden changes in weather, and its water-repellent properties last for a long time, allowing you to enjoy it for a long time. In addition, it has excellent wind resistance, preventing cold air from entering, so you can keep warm even on chilly days. At the same time, its high breathability allows excess moisture to escape, maintaining comfort even during intense activity.

Although this material is a synthetic fiber, its natural and elegant appearance is reminiscent of a cotton blend. Its natural appearance allows it to maintain high functionality as outdoor wear while also achieving a design that blends perfectly with everyday life and urban styling.

Furthermore, a special coating on the back of the fabric gives it a firm and resilient texture. This processing allows the fabric to retain its shape well despite its light weight, and it is also attractive in that it is less likely to wrinkle during use.

The sweatband is made of COOLMAX® fabric.
Made of 100% polyester pique material, it is quick-drying and has UV protection (UPF 40+).

When comparing the Basic Cap and the Enough Hat, you will probably find that the Enough Hat is slightly shallower.
This is because the brim of the Enough Hat is angled so that it does not touch the ears as much as possible, as shown in the image above.
Caps can be worn deep over the ears, but with Hats, the brim is slanted so you have to wear it shallower.

Shimada Co., Ltd. is located in Toyohama-cho, Kannonji City, Kagawa Prefecture.
Founded in 1935, this hat manufacturer started out by producing straw hats and has continued to focus on handcrafting hats by artisans.

Even though they are all called "hats," there are many different specifications. Shimada uses two cutting methods, CAD-CAM (computer-aided design) and molds, and selects the method that best suits the product. In addition, for products that cannot be handled using these two methods or for small-lot production, craftsmen will individually create molds and cut the hats. They always proceed with their work while choosing the best method for the hat and the customer.

The sewing is done by experienced craftsmen who support the production of Made in Japan hats, which is a commitment that we have always made. They sew each hat with care, pouring in the knowledge and skills they have gained from their experience, such as using lock stitching and chain stitching, which have different elasticity levels, depending on the material, purpose, and finish, to ensure a consistently high level of consistent quality.

When sewing apparel (clothing), a seam allowance of about 1cm to 2cm is common, but for hats, the seam allowance is usually about 4mm. Because the seam allowance for hats is very small, high precision is required when sewing.

However, small seam allowances mean that variations in the finished product can be reduced. As a result, even though hats are made by hand, there is little variation between individual hats, and it is possible to produce almost identical products.

Shimada Co., Ltd. is a hat manufacturer that provides high-quality hats made in Japan with a careful craftsmanship spirit. It originally started as a family-run company that manufactured and sold straw hats for farm work.

A few years after the current owner, Kazuhisa Takada, took over the family business, the president of a hat shop in Osaka, who happened to be visiting the 88 temples of Shikoku, got lost while looking at the navigation system. This prompted Takada to try his hand at fashion in the face of a shrinking farm straw hat business, where he trained for about six months at the shop. This is how the current business model began.

Having started out with straw when it was founded, the company has experience, skills and facilities that are rare even in Japan, and has now evolved into a wide range of businesses, from felt molding to sewing woven fabrics, with the company primarily receiving offers from brands that insist on high-quality Made in Japan products.
