An all-round hooded parka for quick temperature changes between moving and resting
CAPSULE 60 PARKA is a lightweight insulation piece at about 370g in size M. The hooded, easy-to-layer cut lets you pull it straight on over a shell while you're moving. The insulation is THERMOFRONT® OA (60g/m²) — a sheet of "OCTAIR®," a hollow, irregular-cross-section fiber with eight protrusions, that traps a large amount of dead air inside the garment, holding body heat efficiently without adding much weight. From a day out to a night at a mountain hut, it's a piece that's easy to pull out and put away as the mountain's temperature shifts.
The core of the warmth — THERMOFRONT® OA at 60g/m²
OCTAIR® is a hollow, irregular-cross-section fiber sharing the same cross-section concept as the Octa® CPCP® used in the ADRIFT line. The hollow core, ringed by eight protrusions, secures a large amount of trapped, still air (dead air) between fibers. Forming this into a flat sheet of insulation resists uneven bunching and achieves a high-level balance of light weight, warmth, and compressibility. At 60g/m², the insulation weight is set to stay easy to carry while still working well for holding warmth during breaks or for regular use in lower-intensity situations.
Thermal performance backed by CLO value
In CLO-value testing comparing it against other outdoor synthetic insulations, THERMOFRONT® recorded higher figures. Thermal testing used the JIS L1096A method (an ASTM-type thermal insulation tester), with CLO values calculated based on ASTM D1518-85. Under objective conditions, it shows superior thermal efficiency among insulations in a comparable weight class.
Material and sustainability
OCTAIR® is a fiber made from 100% recycled polymer sourced from ECOPET®, derived from PET bottles. THERMOFRONT® OA blends in 70% of this OCTAIR®, cutting manufacturing-process CO2 emissions by 23% compared with using an equivalent amount of virgin material (calculated by TA Frontier Co., Ltd.) — lowering environmental impact without giving up comfort or function.
Face fabric — 10D recycled nylon with non-fluorine C0 "GreenBeads" ultra water repellency
The face fabric is an ultra-thin 10-denier recycled nylon made in Japan. The non-fluorine (C0) "GreenBeads" ultra water repellency is designed to make water bead up on the fabric surface even in light rain or snow. Durable water repellency is confirmed to rate 80 points even after 100 washes, so the fabric is built to hold onto its original performance through ordinary care over time. Note that water repellency is not the same as waterproofing — pair it with a rain shell for extended rain or heavy wetting.
Design details built around layering
- Helmet-compatible hood — easy to cover your whole head during belaying or activity on lingering snow
- Glove-friendly cuffs — keep the cuff opening tidy and help block cold air from getting in
- Both hand pockets double as hand warmers — handy for warming up cold hands
- Large drop-in pockets on both sides inside — useful for temporarily stashing bulky items like gloves or a beanie
- Adjustable drawcords at the hood and hem — fine-tune the fit to boost thermal efficiency
- Comes with a stuff sack (stored in the inner chest pocket) — quick to stash and pull out when you're on the move
The fit is a roomy relaxed cut that doesn't pull tight when layered over a mid layer, and it's easy to wear over a hard shell. The pocket bag fabric uses Octa® CPCP®, which also keeps comfort in mind when you tuck your hands in. The packed size is about 11 × 11 × 20cm — small enough for its stuff sack to fit comfortably in the top or side pocket of a pack.
Care and notes
Do not use fabric softener or bleach; hand wash, or use a wash net on a delicates/hand-wash cycle. Do not tumble dry or dry clean. The ultra-thin face fabric can snag on sharp objects, so take care around bushwhacking or rocky ridgelines. Because a thin, light face fabric is used by design, depending on the color the inner fabric or the insulation's stitch lines may show through slightly.
