Introduction

The Basic Hike Pants are designed based on the silhouette of "trousers," without overtly emphasizing a "hiking pant" look.
We wanted them to be easy to move in for hiking, but not look "obviously like hiking pants" when worn in the city. We took these seemingly contradictory desires and made them a reality.

The waist is elasticized, providing instant comfort. However, we didn't want them to be just comfortable. We paid close attention to the fit around the waist, the balance of the rise, and the line from the thighs to the hem, all to create an overall sleek appearance. They look neat even without a belt, and stay in place even when a shirt is tucked in. They allow easy movement while making you look good. That's the presence we aimed for.

And as a major premise for these pants, we deliberately chose not to use stretchy fabric. I myself haven't worn stretch pants for many years. The reason is simple: many stretch pants tend to bag at the knees and lose their silhouette over time. Even if they feel comfortable to wear, it can be a bit disappointing when you see yourself in the mirror. The Basic Hike Pants are designed to prevent that "disappointment" from the start.

These pants are non-stretch. I believe there are many benefits to stretch pants. Their light footwork and ability to follow your movements are often helpful both in the mountains and in daily life.

On the other hand, perhaps due to my wearing habits and usage, with stretch fabric pants, the knee area often showed signs of wear over time, and the impression of the silhouette would change slightly. Even if I liked wearing them, if the lines appeared to be distorted, it would bother me.

That's why for these Basic Hike Pants, which could be called RIDGE MOUNTAIN GEAR's signature pants, instead of relying on stretch, we chose to create ease of movement through pattern design. Although the fabric is non-stretch, we precisely placed the necessary room from the hips to the knees and to the hem, ensuring that movements like walking, squatting, and stepping over obstacles feel natural. As a result, we've created a pair of pants that maintains its ease of movement and its clean silhouette for a long time.

Are they tight because they're non-stretch? On the contrary. We secured ease of movement not by fabric stretch, but by pattern and room allowance. From the hips to the knees, and then to the hem, we've placed necessary space where it's needed. When lifting your legs, squatting, stepping over rocks, or climbing long stairs, you feel like the pants "follow" you rather than being restrictive. Moreover, the lines return to their original shape after movement. They always look neat, no matter when you wear them. I believe that sense of security is the comfort of these pants.

Fabric selection was equally important. It needed to be durable enough for everyday use without worries, and cause minimal stress during hiking. It had to feel good on the skin on hot days and dry quickly even when sweaty. Wash, dry, and wear again. It had to withstand that cycle. We chose a material that doesn't require special handling and functions well within the rhythm of daily life. As a result, it became a pair that you can say, "Today, this is not just 'okay,' but 'this is what I want'" for both city and mountain use.

The Basic Hike Pants are trousers that effortlessly combine design and functionality. They can be worn casually, and even during active movement, their appearance doesn't fall by the wayside. They're relaxed yet never sloppy. Rather than wearing them for hiking, you wear them for "walking days." We aimed for a pair of pants that you can approach with such a sense of familiarity.

These pants use TRUSSAIR™ (Trusair) nylon with Taslan processing.

About TRUSSAIR™ / Trusair

TRUSSAIR™ (Trusair) is a textile developed by Toray, using A-shaped (modified A-shaped) hollow nylon fibers.
Its characteristic lies in the design of the yarn cross-section. Inspired by the "truss structure" used in bridges and buildings, by creating a cross-sectional shape with outward-projecting protrusions, a high void (air layer) is easily formed both inside and outside the fiber, and this void can be structurally maintained. This is the concept behind it.

We feel that this characteristic of "maintaining the hollow structure without collapsing" is what makes TRUSSAIR interesting. Generally, aiming for "lightness" tends to make fabric flimsy, but Trusair, while possessing a lightweight feel derived from its hollow structure, can also easily create a crisp feel (the ability to maintain its shape) as a fabric, as introduced in industry publications.
Therefore, it is a material that is effective for pants where you want a clean silhouette, or for garments where you don't want the shape to collapse.

Furthermore, to achieve this yarn cross-section (special irregular shape) with nylon, Toray was recognized for its advanced spinning technology that creates special irregular shapes through direct spinning, as mentioned in the Senshoku Gosen Award introduction.
In other words, TRUSSAIR is a material that creates the "reason for its lightness" from the design philosophy of the yarn itself, rather than creating an atmosphere through post-processing.

Of course, the final feel, appearance, breathability, and water repellency are not determined solely by the yarn, but vary greatly depending on the weaving structure, density, and finishing process. However, TRUSSAIR / Trusair as a base has the design advantage of simultaneously achieving lightness and crispness. This is the primary reason for choosing this material.

What is Taslan processing?

Taslan processing is a process that uses compressed air to create fine loops and tangles in filament yarns (smooth, long fibers). Instead of tightening the yarn by twisting, the air force disarranges and entangles the filaments, creating a structure where air is held within the yarn.

This processing suppresses the "smooth" appearance characteristic of synthetic fibers, giving it a dry, deep look somewhat similar to natural materials. Additionally, by making the yarn bulkier, the fabric can maintain its lightness while easily creating a moderate three-dimensional feel and crispness.

Design

We designed these pants with a basic silhouette, aiming for a timeless look that can be worn for a long time.
They feature a tapered design silhouette that is roomy at the hips and gradually narrows towards the hem.

The waistband has an internal elastic band and nylon webbing belt.
Although there's no fly (zipper opening) at the front crotch, the waistband opens wide, making them easy to put on and take off. Adjust the waist tape to your preferred waist size.

We were particularly meticulous about the tape adjuster, as well as the waist tape itself.
We sourced various types and sizes of parts from both domestic and international suppliers, focusing on compatibility with the tape, ease of tightening, and thinness.

A gusset is inserted at the crotch.

These pants are equipped with a total of five pockets.
On the left side of the pants, there is a side pocket and a back pocket with a flap.

On the right side of the pants, there is a side pocket, a side seam zipper pocket, and a zipper pocket with a flap.

The side pocket opening is designed with a sharp angle to prevent items from falling out after being placed in, rather than for ease of putting hands in. The pocket bags are also set deeper for the same reason.

The side seam zipper pocket is sized to accommodate a standard smartphone. Besides smartphones, please use it to store keys or other portable items you don't want to drop.

Deep Rise

One of its features is the deep rise design. With a shallow rise, you might worry about your lower back being exposed when bending over, but a deep rise eliminates this concern. Ideally, you should wear them so they sit properly on your hip bones, but you can also adjust the pant length somewhat by raising or lowering the waist position according to your preference.
