The Altamesa 500 V2 from THE NORTH FACE is the 2nd model of the Altamesa 500, a trail running shoe for men. Built around high rebound and thick cushioning, it supports comfortable running on trail. It is intended for training through to racing, with a maximum cushioning underfoot. It keeps the cushioning volume while combining a rebounding midsole with a rocker shape, which leads to the floating ride the model is known for.
High-rebound, high-cushion DREAM foam
The midsole uses DREAM foam. On top of a high level of cushioning it carries rebound, supporting the foot on trail. The stack height is 37.0 mm at the heel and 31.0 mm at the forefoot, for an offset of 6.0 mm.
The outer perimeter of the sole is flared, and the midsole is rockered. Beyond the volume that maximum cushioning brings, the shape of the sole is also part of how the Altamesa 500 V2 rides.
Thin mesh and TPU for both strength and breathability
The upper is built on a thin breathable mesh combined with TPU. Adding TPU to a mesh that lets air through covers the strength a trail running shoe needs while keeping the breathability.
SurfaceCTRL holds the surface, dry or wet
The outsole uses SurfaceCTRL rubber, developed by THE NORTH FACE. SurfaceCTRL is an outsole rubber compound made to keep strong grip without losing lightness. It is a sole material aimed at mountain terrain, where durability and grip both matter.
On the Altamesa 500 V2 it is used as an outsole that grips well on wet surfaces as well as dry ones.
4.0 mm lugs for varied trail surfaces
The outsole lugs are 4.0 mm. Rather than narrowing the shoe to a single kind of surface, the lug pattern is set up for a range of trail surfaces.
The shoe is a USA design. Weight is roughly 275 g for a single 9 inch shoe.
