A 2-piece warm balaclava built for use during activity

The STATIC ADRIFT BALACLAVA is a light, highly breathable balaclava made with Octa®CPCP®. It's a 2-piece design, so you can lower the bottom section to expose your nose, mouth, and chin and adjust how much you breathe, depending on temperature and effort level. It resists feeling stuffy even when worn during activity, so you don't need to take it on and off as often.

The pattern has been revised for easier use, bringing the weight down to 28g (M/L size). It balances the mesh fabric's breathability with the warmth you need.

How the 2-piece construction works

The body is split into an upper and lower piece. When it's windy, pull the lower piece up to cover your nose, mouth, and chin; when heat builds up on a climb, lower it around your neck for a quick cool-down. The pattern has been revised to make it easier to expose your chin, so it's easy to shift the face-cover position when you're breathing hard or fueling up. You can fine-tune how much of your ears, cheeks, and neck are covered, which makes temperature regulation easier as activity intensity changes and cuts down on how often you need to put it on or take it off.

How the Octa®CPCP® mesh fleece works

Octa®CPCP® is a mesh fleece fabric that integrates an irregular cross-section hollow polyester brushed fiber into a mesh face fabric. The dead air held in the space formed by the hollow cores and eight ridges delivers strong warmth and heat-shielding relative to its light weight. It feels about half as heavy as a typical polyester fiber of the same diameter, and it's also moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and good at releasing heat. This material is usually used as a lining, but STATIC uses it as a standalone fleece. The combination of breathable mesh and brushed fiber lets heat and moisture escape easily even when you sweat, helping you stay comfortable during activity.

Season and use

Light and compact to carry, it works across spring, fall, and winter. It's also easy to bring on a summer alpine traverse as a spare warm layer for stops or windy ridgelines. Because the material and design address both sweating and chilling during activity, the same piece works whether you're climbing hard or walking an exposed ridge.

Choosing a size

Choose S/M (53–57cm) or M/L (57–62cm) based on head circumference. Since you'll be raising and lowering the face-cover section, a slightly looser fit than exact can be easier to use in some situations. If you're unsure, go with whichever size is closer to your measured head circumference.

Care and notes

Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Hand wash, or use a laundry net on a delicates/hand-wash cycle. Do not tumble dry or dry clean. The fabric is prone to snagging on sharp objects, so take care when bushwhacking.
