A long sleeve that keeps 70% wool and its softness while standing up to abrasion
When you wear wool for hiking and climbing, rubbing against a pack or against rock is hard to avoid. The STATIC FORGE WOOL L/S is a long sleeve that raises abrasion resistance while keeping merino wool at a high 70%. The fabric is 70% merino wool and 30% nylon, and the M size weighs 190g.
The durability comes from a spun yarn called Titan Spun. A wool yarn sits at the core, and two ultrafine nylon yarns are wound around the outside at even intervals. Rather than raising the share of nylon, it adds resistance to rubbing while keeping a wool-led fabric.
The abrasion resistance Titan Spun provides
What STATIC set out to do with the FORGE WOOL series was to secure durability without lowering the wool content. The wool blend is 70%. In Titan Spun, ultrafine nylon yarns are placed around the core wool yarn, so the fabric meets outside friction while keeping the softness wool is known for.
It is a fabric built for places where friction repeats: hiking, where the shoulder harness and back panel of a pack rub against the fabric, and climbing, where the body comes close to rock. Rather than simply blending nylon into a wool fabric, the abrasion resistance is built into the structure of the yarn itself. That is the core of FORGE WOOL.
Tested against coarse granite and heavy packs
In climbing tests, STATIC entered an offwidth, a crack in the rock wide enough for the body, and made repeated contact with coarse-grained granite. In those tests, no visible major damage was found.
Testing also covered hiking with a pack over 10kg and heavy sweating. Under those conditions, STATIC reports that pilling did not occur. With repeated use, it will not stay exactly as new, but in STATIC's testing there was no change in shape either, and it stands as a wool garment built for long, hard use.
An athletic fit that follows the body
The fit is athletic. As a long sleeve it covers the arms, and the Titan Spun fabric of 70% merino wool and 30% nylon is used throughout. The fabric is made in China and the garment is sewn in China.
Labels and packaging considered alongside the product
Recycled material is used in the woven labels and the care labels as well. Cutting waste from production is not incinerated but passed to a recycler. Garments are delivered wrapped in thin paper rather than individually bagged in plastic. STATIC has looked at the materials used in production and the packaging at delivery, not only the fabric of the garment.
