DESIGNER'S VOICE
This was a comment from outdoor writer Shotaro Takahashi while developing the SNAP prototype. It was the decisive remark that determined the direction of SNAP.
In the summer of 2018, development of SNAP, which I was in charge of as a designer for the first time, began.
Struggling with an unfamiliar sewing machine, I worked to bring ideas to life, and a period of repeated testing began.
I believed that waterproofing was essential for a pouch, an item that holds valuable things. To prevent water from entering the pouch even in sudden rain, I was particular about waterproofing performance, using special fabrics and waterproof zippers, and repeated prototyping. Before I knew it, over 20 prototypes were stacked on my desk.
When I showed one of those prototypes to Shotaro Takahashi, his response was the comment at the beginning of this text.
I was startled and snapped back to reality. My obsession with the pouch's waterproofing had resulted in a pouch with poor accessibility and low practicality.
"This won't do," I thought, and decided to rethink new ideas from scratch.
Instead of making the main body waterproof, why not just remove it quickly if it starts to rain?
Yes, let's create an accessible pouch with quick attachment and detachment!
At that moment, my vision cleared, and I felt like I saw the goal.
To quickly attach and detach the pouch to a backpack, a new, unprecedented removal method had to be developed.
It needed to be easy to remove, yet firmly secured to the harness. These conflicting requirements troubled me. The final answer I arrived at was a flap called "SNAP FLAPS," which secures the main body by using the shoulder harness as a stopper.
This flap made it possible to quickly attach the pouch without removing the backpack even while active, and to easily remove it and wear it after taking off the pack.
From drawing lines in sketches to using the sewing machine, I repeatedly received feedback from Saito and rebuilt prototypes, enhancing SNAP's completeness as a tool. I was anxious about whether it would be accepted by everyone when it was released, but I am delighted that it has been so well-received that we had to order additional production immediately after its launch.
Please use your SNAP to its fullest in the field with your favorite backpack.
