Umbrellas are a necessity for long-distance hikers to protect themselves from UV rays in the harsh desert and alpine regions of America. In North America, non-folding umbrellas are popular because of the balance between effective surface area, lightness, and functionality, but in Japan, many hikers also want foldable umbrellas because they are more compact. Umbrellas are just as effective in Japan for long trail life and in a variety of situations. Why not try hiding a folding umbrella in the side pocket of your backpack?
