Octa used as a fleece rather than an insulation lining: a crew neck that is light and vents well

The STATIC ADRIFT CREW is a minimal crew-neck fleece, without a zip or a hood, made from TEIJIN's Octa®CPCP® mesh fleece used as a single layer. A material normally combined with a nylon shell as the lining of active insulation is used here as a fleece in its own right. It is a choice that prioritises light weight and layering flexibility, matched to the realities of hiking in Japan, where an insulating layer spends a long time being carried and where you switch between moving and resting often.

The base is a mesh-structured polyester fleece. Brushed fibres with a shaped cross-section, featuring hollow cores and eight projections, hold dead air and give excellent insulating efficiency for their weight. At the same time the mesh moves heat and moisture out quickly, so it resists clamminess even when worn while you are moving. It is far lighter than the roughly 300 g fleeces generally described as lightweight, and packs well. The weight is 115 g in size M. Balancing warmth against breathability, it suits anyone looking to cut pack weight.

Designed to be worn while you keep moving

• A gusset under the arm gives a pattern in which the hem is less likely to ride up as you raise and lower your arms, limiting exposure at the back and waist.
• A minimal design that omits additions such as a zip or a hood, so there is less interference when layering and the weight stays down.
• The balance of high breathability from the mesh fabric and moderate warmth makes it easier to reduce how often you put it on and take it off.

It is useful across a wide range: a mid layer for moving in spring and autumn, and a breathable intermediate layer in winter. Being light and compact, it also works on summer traverses as a spare insulating layer for stops and for changes in altitude. The fit is relaxed, with room that makes it easy to wear over a lightweight base layer.

What Octa®CPCP® delivers

Octa®CPCP® is a Japanese-made mesh fleece material in which a mesh face is bonded to brushed hollow polyester fibres with a shaped cross-section on the inside.

• Light weight: a fibre structure that is lighter than polyester fibres of the same diameter.
• Insulating efficiency: dead air is held in the voids created by the hollow cores and the projections.
• High breathability and heat release: the mesh structure lets surplus heat and moisture out while you move.
• Wicking and quick drying: a fabric that feels dry thanks to the properties of polyester and to its structure.

By using this material as a standalone fleece, STATIC raises light weight, packability and freedom of layering compared with active insulation that combines it with a nylon shell.

Sustainability

• The fabric is produced at an OEKO-TEX® certified factory in Japan.
• CO2 emissions during fabric production are 23% lower than Octa®CPCP® made from virgin polyester (raw material through to fabric shipment, calculated by Teijin Frontier).
• Dyeing uses biomass (plant-derived) rather than petroleum-derived inputs.
• Textile waste generated in making the fabric is recycled. The brand, size and care labels also use recycled polyester derived from PET bottles.
• Products are shipped wrapped in thin paper rather than individually bagged in plastic.
• The ByeHello project: an ongoing circular initiative that regenerates offcuts and collected garments into polyester fibre, then repeats the cycle of making new products and collecting them again.

Care and handling

• Fabric softener and bleach must not be used.
• Hand wash, or wash in a laundry net on a delicate or hand-wash cycle.
• Do not tumble dry or dry clean. Reshape and dry in the shade.
• Mesh fabric is vulnerable to snagging, so take care with abrasion and sharp objects when pushing through brush.

Size and fit

Measurements are taken flat. Centre back length is measured from the centre of the back neck to the hem.

There may be slight differences between the stated size and the actual product. The fit is relaxed.
