A rain cape born from a long-distance hiker's playful streak, built to actually be used
The second piece in the Gnu series, the Gnu S Cape is a rain cape and shelter built not as an emergency backup but as something you'll want to bring along and actually use. It weighs about 140g for the cape alone, 145g with the stuff sack—light enough to carry on any regular hike. As both rain gear and a shelter, it's pared down to the essentials.
Features and how to use it
- As an oversized rain cape, it's large enough to pull straight over a 40L-class backpack. The back hem runs longer than the GNU CAPE's, helping keep your back drier.
- As a rain cape it runs a bit large, since it's also built to double as a shelter. We recommend dealing with the front hem some way to keep your footing visible and avoid stepping on it.
- It also works as a minimal shelter. The size is extremely compact, built with the assumption that it suits hikers who know how to use it.
- The supple, highly water-repellent fabric is easy to spread out and just as easy to pack away.
- A brimmed hood helps keep rain out of your eyes. It's the kind of detail that's often simplified away in the name of weight savings, but this one is lined at the brim for better visibility and rain protection.
Material and construction
The main fabric is 20d silicone-coated polyester—supple, easy to handle, and highly water-repellent. Key stress points are reinforced with 200d Spectra grid-stop nylon. It comes in a single color, Moroccan Blue.
