An Advanced-Material Base Layer Built for Low-to-Mid-Intensity Mountain Days

The DISTANCE L/S RELAX is a long-sleeve base layer made from an advanced material designed with microplastic impact in mind. The fabric is NIKKE AXIO (74% wool, 26% nylon). A unique structure wraps nylon inside bundles of wool fiber, reducing fiber breakage and shape distortion while boosting durability and preserving wool's comfort. This nylon also carries a special biodegradable treatment, so in addition to wool's natural biodegradability, the nylon itself breaks down in both seawater and soil. It meets ASTM D6691 (seawater biodegradability) and ASTM D5511 (soil biodegradability).

The AXIO Core Structure: Durability and Pack-Strap Friction in Mind

Because a base layer sits closest to the skin for long stretches, how long it lasts matters as much as how it feels. AXIO places nylon at the core of the fiber bundle, with wool making up most of the surface contact. This raises the proportion of wool while keeping the fabric's strength and shape stability. Even on low-elevation approaches, in forested terrain, or on fair-weather spring climbs — situations where you might carry a pack directly over the base layer — the fabric is built to withstand repeated friction at the shoulders and back.

A Waffle Structure That Traps Air — Warmth Without Added Weight

To add warmth without significantly increasing fabric weight, the DISTANCE uses a three-dimensional waffle structure. The surface texture traps dead air, reducing the cold air circulation that happens right against the skin. The texture also improves skin release, adding softness against the skin and suppleness during movement. In colder months, keeping a layer of air between skin and garment is an effective way to guard against cold — and that thinking shapes a fit that stays close to the body without restricting movement.

A Relaxed Silhouette Built for Easy Layering

The oversized silhouette extends to just cover the hips. The relaxed fit feels natural even worn alone. Raglan sleeves add freedom of movement at the arms, and thumbholes at the cuffs keep the fabric covering the back of the hand when layered under a fleece or shell, cutting cold air at the wrist. Anti-static treatment also reduces the static shocks that tend to occur in dry conditions, for less discomfort on the move.

Where It's Built to Perform

This isn't designed for the heavy sweat of high-intensity running — it's built for low-to-mid-intensity movement over long hours in the mountains. From the first steps of an approach to exposed, windy time on a ridgeline, through a day with large swings in body and air temperature, the air layer's insulation and the comfort of a primarily natural-fiber fabric work together with the material's durability. The design accounts for the extra wear at friction-prone areas.

Sustainability

• Uses nylon that biodegrades in both seawater and soil (meets ASTM D6691 / ASTM D5511)
• Cutting scraps generated during production are recycled into material for other products rather than discarded
• Tags and labels use recycled polyester and cotton
• Shipped wrapped in tissue paper instead of individual plastic bags

Care

Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Hand wash, or machine wash in a laundry net on a delicates/hand-wash cycle. Do not tumble dry or dry clean.
