An Anko-Based Energy Gel You'll Actually Want to Eat on the Mountain
ANDO_'s "Sara to Nomeru Yokan" (Smooth-Drinking Yokan) is a gel-style energy food made from an anko (sweet red bean) base. One stick is 55g and about 100kcal. It's a stick-pouch style trail food that's easy to use whenever you want a quick energy boost during a climb.
Sports gels are quick to take in on the move, but they can feel overly sweet or unmistakably like "exercise fuel." Because ANDO_ is anko-based, it doubles as a trail food while still feeling closer to a mountain snack or dessert.
A Good Fit for Hiking Too — A Small Sweet Treat on Your Breaks
Partway up a long climb, on a summit break, or right before you head down when you want a bit more energy. It's lighter than a solid snack or bread, and more satisfying than a drink alone — ANDO_ fills that gap nicely as a trail food.
Beyond drinking it straight from the pouch, you can also pour it into a cup or cookware and warm it slightly for a treat closer to warm oshiruko (sweet red bean soup). That makes it useful for cold-weather hikes or whenever you want a change of pace during a long day out.
Why It's Chosen for Trail Running
ANDO_ is also a popular fuel choice for trail running. At about 100kcal per stick, it's easy to count, easy to carry in its stick pouch, and easy to eat on the move. When the taste of regular gels starts to feel heavy mid-race, anko's natural sweetness gives you another option to rotate in.
Especially in the later stages of a long race, chewing solid food can get harder and sweet gels can become difficult to get down. Having a fuel with a different taste and texture on hand for those moments makes it easier to pick what fits how you're feeling.
Choosing Between No Salt and Salted
For everyday carb intake or as a hiking trail food, the No Salt type is the one to reach for. It's a standard flavor that's easy to choose when you're already managing sodium through your drinks or meals.
On days with heavy sweating, in hot-weather hiking, or during trail running races and long outings, the Salted type is easier to use. It's made with salt from Miyako Island, with salt content of about 0.15g per stick. It's not a strong salty taste — just a touch of saltiness added to the anko's sweetness.
