A light, packable year-round insulated pant

CAPSULE 40 PANTS is a lightweight insulated pant that bridges the gap between moving and resting. It uses THERMOFRONT® OA insulation at an area weight of 40g/m², sized for year-round use. It balances freedom of movement with enough warmth and high compressibility, making it easy to carry. Hand-warmer pockets on both sides, a zippered pocket that doubles as a stuff sack, and a hem drawcord all translate directly into how it gets used on the trail or on the road.

The insulation — THERMOFRONT® OA's character and warmth

THERMOFRONT® OA is a synthetic insulation formed by shaping "OCTAIR®," a hollow, irregular-cross-section fiber, into a sheet. The hollow core, combined with eight protrusions around the cross-section, traps a large amount of dead air, holding heat efficiently despite the light weight. Because it's a sheet, it resists bunching, giving even warmth across the whole garment. The fiber also holds its loft well and recovers readily after compression, striking a good balance between packing down small and bouncing back.

Thermal performance is evaluated by CLO value, where it recorded higher figures than other synthetic insulations made for outdoor use. Testing used the JIS L1096A method (an ASTM-type thermal insulation tester), with CLO values calculated based on ASTM D1518-85. That data-backed "warmth for the weight" is what makes these pants easy to live with.

R&D Staff Voice by STATIC

Both synthetic insulation and down have their strengths and their drawbacks.
Once I understood both sides, synthetic insulation became the one I reached for. I've now been using it as my main insulation for over ten years.

Every well-known insulation brand has its own distinct characteristics, and I switch between them depending on the use case. A big reason I lean on synthetic insulation is that its loft holds up even when wet, and it keeps performing even with somewhat rough handling. It's also easy to care for, which makes it easy to use in the field without a second thought.

Testing the THERMOFRONT® OA prototype samples, what stood out clearly compared with the many synthetic insulations I've tried was its sense of loft.

Even at 40 or 60g/m² — a fairly standard thickness for synthetic insulation — it held a solid loft. The moment I put it on, I felt the lightness and the sense of being wrapped in a thick layer of dead air. Given how much warmth it delivers for its weight, it felt closer to down despite being a synthetic fill.

The domestic 10D recycled nylon paired with it has a light, supple hand. It's a combination that makes the most of THERMOFRONT® OA's loft without crushing it. Because the fabric prioritizes light weight above all, it does need some care around snags — but if it ever does tear, we offer repairs.

To help it last as long as possible, we've set up a repair program, and in the design we've kept eyelets and other hardware that could come loose to a minimum, to reduce the risk of damage in the first place.

Sustainability — recycled polymer and lower manufacturing CO2

OCTAIR® is a 100% recycled polymer sourced from ECOPET®, derived from PET bottles. THERMOFRONT® OA blends in 70% of this OCTAIR®, cutting manufacturing-process CO2 emissions by 23% compared with virgin material (calculated by TA Frontier Co., Ltd.). Since this is an insulation layer you'll reach for often, it's built with both comfort and a lighter environmental footprint in mind.

The shell — 10D recycled nylon with non-fluorine C0 ultra water repellency

The face fabric is an ultra-thin 10-denier recycled nylon made in Japan. The non-fluorine "GreenBeads" ultra water-repellent (C0) finish keeps a durable water repellency confirmed to rate 80 points after 100 washes. It helps keep the inside dry through light moisture — a sudden shower, condensation, or sitting on a damp bench — supporting your temperature regulation while you move.

To prioritize the insulation's loft and the garment's light weight, a deliberately thin, light face fabric is used. Depending on the color, the inner fabric or the insulation's stitch lines may show through slightly. Take care around bushwhacking or sharp rock, where snagging or abrasion is more likely.

Built for everyday use — 3 pockets, packable, hem drawcord

There are three pockets in total. The two side pockets are open, doubling as hand warmers, and the zippered security pocket on the right lets the pants pack directly into themselves. The hem drawcord adjusts the silhouette and also helps keep cold air from creeping in at the ankle. The fit is a relaxed cut with room to spare, easy to layer over a mid layer, and easy to adjust on days with a wide temperature swing or higher activity level. It weighs about 210g in size M — light enough to tuck into a corner of your pack.

Where it earns its keep year-round

The 40g/m² lightweight sheet insulation is useful across a wide range of situations: high elevations from spring through autumn, cool mornings and evenings, and holding body heat before and after winter activity. Trailhead breaks, downtime at a tent or mountain hut, sitting around a campfire, or a cold morning on a trip — in all the moments you put a layer on and take it off often, the light weight and good compressibility really pay off. The packable construction and durable water-repellent face fabric make it even easier to carry and handle.

Care and handling

Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Hand wash, or use a wash net on a delicates/hand-wash cycle. Do not tumble dry or dry clean. The thin face fabric can snag on sharp objects, so choosing your route and activity with that in mind will help it last.
