Staff review

Lightness is important. But I want to use it hard, and if possible, for a long time. If possible, in a good way. But that "good way" is hard to define.

New materials created by technology are appealing, but they often just degrade with prolonged use. However, thick cotton fabrics and vegetable-tanned leather, even when worn out – or rather, *because* they are worn out – take on a rich character and a nice atmosphere.

Now, macpac's new Kete is a backpack born from a collaboration with Hikers Depot. While maintaining lightness, it uses AzTec, macpac's original cotton-based, highly waterproof material. It's not ultralight, but at 540g in its minimal state, it's plenty light. And it possesses a stripped-down, primitive functional beauty.

It's tough enough to withstand bushwhacking, being thrown onto a dirty trail, scraped against rocks, or even taken into a stream. Its primitive nature leaves room for you to add functions yourself or think about how to use it, which adds depth to your activities.

I used it on my hike along the Osaka Loop Nature Trail, and I found it interesting how I could play freely with it depending on myself, and experiment with different ways of using it. Whether it's how you play or how you use your gear, I think it's okay if it's not the same as everyone else. I walked, feeling that again. Let's break free from preconceptions! Like Steve Jobs,
Play different.
That's how I want to play.
