Tony Post, who as CEO of Vibram USA brought "Vibram FiveFingers" to the world, arrived at a conclusion: barefoot feel is wonderful, but covering long distances calls for cushioning and support. Terraventure, the brand's flagship that embodies that philosophy, has evolved into its 5th generation.

■ Roomy Toe Box (free toes, locked heel) What sets it apart from many wide shoes is its last (foot-shape) design. Up front, a "Roomy Toe Box" lets the toes splay freely and grip the ground, while the midfoot through the heel is cinched in for a secure hold. This "free toes, locked heel" construction keeps the foot from shifting on the trail and preserves a sense of unity with the shoe even on technical ground.
■ 3mm Drop (a natural stance with a touch of support) Rather than fully flat (0mm drop), it deliberately keeps a 3mm incline—a figure that encourages the body's naturally upright posture while giving the Achilles and calves a little support. The sweet spot between "almost barefoot" naturalness and the support of a real shoe is why so many people take to it without any discomfort.
■ Protection & Ground Feel (seeing through the soles of your feet) A flexible rock plate is built into the forefoot to guard against the jab of sharp rocks and stones. But it isn't rigid armor. By retaining the ground feel that lets you read the trail's bumps and conditions directly, it sharpens your balance on uneven terrain and gives you the control to head off trouble like turned ankles.

Water-resistant "FKT Insole": The newly adopted closed-cell bead foam resists soaking up water. Even when drenched by rain or stream crossings it drains quickly, heading off trouble underfoot.
Improved durability: The upper uses a light, breathable mesh, with reinforcement added all the way around (360°) at its lower edge—resistant to abrasion on rock, yet still breathable and durable. The lace eyelets were switched to resin parts, improving wear resistance under lace tension so the shoe stays with you longer.
