Topo Athletic's "ST-6" chases minimalism while keeping just enough "give" to handle today's hard road surfaces.

A fusion of "barefoot feel" and Topo's proprietary ZipFoam™. The sole is a mere 14mm thick—thin enough to read the ground's bumps and slopes directly through your soles. That thinness usually comes at the cost of cushioning, but the ST-6 uses Topo's proprietary ZipFoam™ in the midsole.

What ZipFoam™ brings: More resilient and durable than typical EVA, ZipFoam™ lets a thin sole firmly absorb and disperse landing impact. "You feel the ground, yet the jolt stays mild." That fine balance lets you enjoy a natural, pain-free stride while lowering the risk of injury.

Why choose the ST-6: its contrast in feel.

  1. A locked-in heel and midfoot: a wide forefoot alone lets the foot slide inside. The ST-6 cinches firmly around the heel and instep, so foot and shoe move as one whether you run or walk.

  2. Toes set free: in contrast to the held-down rear half, the toe area is remarkably free. You can splay your toes wide to grip the ground, drawing out your natural sense of balance.

There's a reason why we stock running shoes that are not designed for trails, even though we're not a running shop.

I've been using these since the previous model and have worn them quite a bit. From that experience, I feel that this model also has the perfect balance of softness and thickness. I've summarized the key points I've noticed, from running to everyday use.

These shoes have a thin sole, but the "slight cushioning" provided by ZipFoam™ is just right. They're ideal for focusing on the sense of contact between the soles of your feet and your form. Personally, I think it's a good idea to rotate between shoes of different thicknesses when jogging. This is because the different thicknesses and softness help to distribute the strain and irritation on your muscles. I recommend wearing these in between thick-soled shoes.

Shoes that are too thin can actually make you tired when walking, but the ST-6 has cushioning, so it can be used for everyday commuting or standing work in a store. It is also an excellent walking shoe, as it combines the feeling of being barefoot with the comfort of not getting tired.

It's also convenient for the gym and on the go. It fits easily in your bag, so it's easy to carry when you're out running or heading to the gym after work.

As with the previous model, the heel area feels secure. The arch area is intentionally designed to be tight, so the fit is very good, but if you want more room or are concerned about tightness, you may want to consider going up half a size.
