The "WIDE" build gives the foot even more room across the width than the standard model.
The trail shoe market right now is dominated by gear built to run fast — high stacks, strong rebound. The reason the Lone Peak has been loved for years, and holds such standing among hikers in particular, sits at the opposite end of that.
This is not a shoe that runs you. It is a tool for using your own feet fully and feeling the ground directly.
The Lone Peak's 25mm stack height matters because the sole of your foot is not simply a contact patch — it is where your body's movement and the mountain's information meet.
The thicker a sole gets, the more a slight tilt in the ground becomes a large angle at your ankle joint, which turns into load and into the risk of rolling it. Because the Lone Peak keeps the distance between ground and foot short, you can read what you are standing on, and there is no lag between your foot and the terrain.
You place each step where you intend to. There is plenty of cushioning, yet the front line where you read the ground stays clear — a reassurance a high-stack shoe does not give you.
The biggest step forward in the "9+" is the Vibram® MegaGrip outsole. Not worrying about slipping on wet rock or mud is not only a safety matter. The attention you would have spent on not slipping goes back into enjoying the terrain in front of you.
On technical ground you can trust the feel through your soles and commit to the next step without hesitation. That mental room is what lets you enjoy a long day out, or a long run, all the way to the end.
