DESIGNER'S VOICE
This was a question posed by outdoor writer Shotaro Takahashi while looking at a prototype during the development of SNAP. It was the decisive comment that shaped SNAP's direction.
In the summer of 2018, SNAP development began, the first project I was in charge of as a designer.
Days of trial and error followed, struggling with an unfamiliar sewing machine while bringing ideas to life and repeatedly testing them.
I believed that waterproofing was essential for a pouch, as it holds important items. I meticulously focused on waterproofing, using special fabrics and waterproof zippers to prevent water from entering the pouch during sudden rain. Before I knew it, over 20 prototypes had accumulated on my desk.
When I showed one of these prototypes to Shotaro Takahashi, his response was the aforementioned quote.
I was jolted back to reality. My obsession with waterproofing had resulted in a pouch with poor accessibility and low practicality.
"This won't do," I thought, and decided to rethink new ideas from scratch.
Instead of making the main body waterproof, what if I could just quickly remove it when it rains?
Yes, let's create a highly accessible pouch with quick attachment and detachment!
At that moment, my vision cleared, and I felt like I saw the goal.
To quickly attach and detach the pouch from a backpack, I needed to develop a new, unprecedented removal method.
It had to be easy to remove yet firmly secured to the harness. These conflicting requirements troubled me. The answer I ultimately arrived at was the "SNAP FLAPS" — a flap that uses the shoulder harness as a stopper to secure the main body.
This flap made it possible to quickly attach the pouch without taking off your backpack during activity, and easily remove it and wear it even after taking off your pack.
From the drawing of sketch lines to the use of the sewing machine, I received countless rejections from Saito, rebuilding prototypes repeatedly to enhance SNAP's perfection as a tool. At the time of its release, I was unsure if it would be accepted by everyone, but I'm delighted that it was so well-received that we had to order additional production immediately after launch.
Take SNAP out into the field with your favorite backpack and use it to its fullest.
