The just-right frying pan that somehow never existed until now
Handmade fire tools born from the dedication of those who love the campfire
TAKIBISM is a brand that began when Hajime Samukawa—an outdoor life advisor whose life's work is the campfire—teamed up with Noboru Makizuka of Makizuka Ironworks, an iron artisan, to give shape to the fire tools Samukawa was after. Each tool is crafted one by one with care, packed with the ideas and clever touches that only true campfire lovers could dream up, resulting in playful, characterful pieces. Alongside Makizuka Ironworks in Takamatsu City, TAKIBISM's products are made by highly skilled partner workshops around the Setouchi (Seto Inland Sea) region. When a devotion to the campfire meets Japanese craftsmanship, the finest fire tools are born.
A frying pan full of the TAKIBISM spirit
The Sizzling Frying Pan is, just as its name suggests, an iron frying pan named for the sizzle of cooking your favorite meat, vegetables, and other ingredients. Iron holds heat well and passes it evenly into the food, finishing your cooking all the more deliciously. The handle is black walnut—rugged yet warm. There's also a hook at the tip of the pan, handy for hanging: build a tool hanger with the Multi-Long Pegs and add a hook to hang the frying pan or Chinese Pan, or try combining it with other brands carried by UPI.
*When setting the Booster on a fire stand from another brand, always check that the size fits. Using it while unstable can lead to an accident.
A size and heft that's easy to swing one-handed, even over the fire
The pan is about 26.5cm across—an easy, usable size—and at roughly 950g it's light for an iron pan, made so even smaller hands can swing it with one hand. At about 10cm deep, ingredients are less likely to spill when you toss them, making it well suited to stews and paella too. An iron spatula (sold separately) makes flipping food quick and easy. Like the Chinese Pan, it can also be used on the Booster (sold separately). By fitting a commercially available magnetic hook as a handle onto the existing Frying Pan Dish (Large), you can even use it as a lid for the Sizzling Frying Pan.
At home, too
Take it outside for the outdoors, and use it at home the rest of the time. Indoors you can cook on the stovetop or over a wood stove, and the many ways to use it mean your camping gear won't pile up in storage. It also makes a great gift for people who don't head outdoors.
Why Makizuka Ironworks cookware makes everything taste better
They say food just tastes better outdoors, but iron cookware, with its high thermal conductivity, brings real advantages of its own. Makizuka Ironworks' cooking pieces also skip the fussy seasoning normally needed before first use.
- Good heat conduction and excellent heat retention spread warmth evenly, cooking food evenly and deliciously.
- With every use the oil works in, so you can raise it into a lifelong pan that lasts for decades—generations, even.
- Unlike Teflon-coated pans, it's highly durable and can take rough handling.
- Being iron, it even adds a little iron to your diet.
To keep it for years to come
As with iron cookware in general, don't use detergent when washing. Loosen grime with hot water, wash with a brush or wooden spatula, then wipe dry and let it dry fully. Metal scourers and abrasives are best avoided, as they strip the seasoned film on the surface. Regular seasoning also helps prevent rust and reduce sticking. With everyday care you can enjoy the shifts in color and other changes over time—finish it into a piece you grow attached to. Cared for and well used, it becomes a frying pan you won't want to part with.
