A FABRIC utilizing ALUULA. This is the latest version of TRAIL BUM's classic "BUMMER" model, made more compact. By shortening the back panel by 5cm and adding a curve to the bottom, the capacity has been reduced by 5L, and the roll-top allows for volume adjustment depending on the situation. This backpack achieves both lightness and high durability at a high level.

The size, neither too big nor too small, is also appealing. I think it's a size that makes it easy to consider various uses, from day hikes to overnight mountain trips, depending on individual styles.

What is ALUULA?

"ALUULA," developed by ALUULA Composites Inc. in British Columbia, Canada, is a material that has set a new standard in the history of outdoor fabrics. It was born as an independent brand in 2020, as a result of continuously pursuing "lighter, stronger" in the world of wind sports, where gear is tested in extreme wind and sea conditions.

Degradation is structurally prevented by not using adhesives.

The fundamental problem with conventional high-tech fabrics lay in "adhesives." The main raw material, UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene), is one of the strongest existing fibers. However, this fiber has extremely poor compatibility with adhesives. To bond it with a waterproof film, it was necessary to blend it with other materials, which compromised the inherent strength of UHMWPE and caused delamination over long-term use. In other words, despite using the strongest material, its performance was undermined by adhesives. ALUULA has fundamentally solved this contradiction. Through a unique adhesive-free thermal fusion process (Fuse Technology), UHMWPE and waterproof film are successfully integrated directly at a molecular level. This achieves a 100% polyethylene (PE) single material with no foreign substances. This is not merely an improvement in the manufacturing process, but a transformation in the material design itself.

Features of ALUULA

  • Approximately 8 times the strength-to-weight ratio of steel
  • The fabric itself is waterproof - Repels water inherently as a material, without relying on coatings.
  • UV resistance - Structurally strong against degradation from ultraviolet rays.
  • Zero delamination - Since no adhesive is present, delamination physically does not occur.
  • Recyclable - As a single material, it can be chemically recycled. It is a material designed for future collection and circularity on a product basis.

For those who use this backpack

Without the need for an adhesive layer, the fabric is thinner and lighter. And the failure mode of "delamination," which conventional laminated fabrics were inherently prone to, structurally does not exist. It's not about developing character with use; the mechanism of degradation itself changes.

Since the fabric itself is waterproof, you can wash it with water without worrying about coatings, and maintenance is easy. Furthermore, as it is 100% a single material, it can be chemically recycled into polyethylene in the future.

"Make it lighter and it becomes weaker; make it stronger and it becomes heavier."

ALUULA has broken through the dilemma that outdoor gear has faced for decades with the simple revolution of eliminating adhesives. Along with the ideal relationship with gear of "using it for a long time and then properly returning it," it should make you ponder how fundamentally different it is from previous packs.
