It prevents discomfort such as stuffiness and slippage, and provides a firm hold to support long walks and activities.

Repeated friction, hook-and-loop fasteners, catching on branches, and contact with hard objects can damage the fabric. Knit fabrics tend to shrink easily with repeated use and washing, and tumble drying in particular should be avoided as it can cause significant shrinkage.
