Design
This shirt was created with a basic design in mind, blending naturally into everyday life. It features a simple and versatile style without excessive decoration, making it easy to wear in a variety of situations.
The silhouette is designed to be relaxed and not too tight around the body. We focused on ease of movement, but also sought to strike a perfect balance so that it doesn't look sloppy. This means that you can wear it for long periods of time without feeling any stress.
It's a simple design shirt, but the details are carefully crafted.
Rounded Edges
Since it is susceptible to wear and tear, we designed it to eliminate as many sharp points as possible.
In order to prevent wear, we used small round shapes in these areas. Usually, these areas are finished with sharp angles, which makes them more susceptible to wear and tear and makes fraying more noticeable. By incorporating small round shapes, we aimed to create a design that reduces damage from wear and tear and maintains its beauty for a long period of time.
However, this small round shape requires advanced sewing techniques. The stitch pitch must be set finely and there is an increased need for manual work along the curves, making it a very delicate and difficult process for the craftsman. Nevertheless, we chose this shape in pursuit of the beauty and durability of the finished product.
Food
The biggest feature of this product is the hood.
- Warmth: When hiking, you may be exposed to low temperatures and strong winds. Wearing a hood increases the warmth around your head and neck, preventing your body temperature from dropping.
・Windproof and rainproof: When hiking, you may encounter sudden rain or wind. The hood covers your head and neck tightly and protects you from rain and wind. This material is water-repellent, so it can withstand light rain.
・UV protection: When hiking in high mountains, UV rays can often be strong. Wearing a hood can protect the skin around your head and neck from direct UV rays. The material used is UV-blocking, so it provides excellent UV protection.
- Breathability: This material is highly breathable, which reduces stuffiness around the head when the hood is worn, supporting a comfortable hike.
We deliberately chose a very simple design for the hood shape. This is because we wanted this shirt to have a presence as a "shirt" rather than a so-called "shell." Since we are not imagining situations where the hood will be used frequently, we felt that a complex design and structure was not necessary.
Rather, we wanted the hood to have the role of being "ready to use in an emergency" and "a subtle presence in everyday life." By eliminating unnecessary details, the lightness of the entire shirt is not compromised and the hood does not stand out too much.
This simplicity is one of the charms of the Hooded Long Sleeve Shirt. It won't get in the way in any situation, and is useful when you need it. We pursued that perfect balance.
We made detailed adjustments to the size of the hood. We sought to strike the perfect balance between a hood that fits comfortably around the back and neck when not being worn, and not feeling too tight when worn. If the size is too small, it loses functionality, and if it is too large, the overall silhouette is ruined. For this reason, we proceeded with the design while searching for a middle ground that balances appearance and practicality.
This size allows the hood to blend in naturally in any situation without compromising the overall look of the shirt. For example, when worn on a windy day or in light rain, it functions well, but when not worn, it doesn't make an unnecessary presence and maintains the simplicity of the shirt. This perfect balance of "not too small, not too big" makes it unobtrusively easy to use.
The hood string is made of the same fabric, instead of rubber cord or rope. This choice is intended to create a soft and light look while maintaining the uniformity of the entire shirt. It blends naturally with the overall design of the hood and is not too conspicuous, so as not to ruin the simple impression of the shirt.
If you want to narrow the hood opening, you can easily adjust it by simply pulling the string. If you want to secure it more firmly, tie the string and adjust it. We stuck to this simplicity because we wanted to position the hood as a "function that is useful only when necessary." By giving it excessive adjustment functions, we were able to avoid the hood being too assertive and maintain the overall lightness.
When you tighten the strings without putting the hood on, the whole hood will have a unique look and change shape. This adjustment will prevent the hood from flapping in the wind and give a neater look. In addition, it will fit just right around the neck, so it will also provide a little extra warmth.
This little extra feature gives you peace of mind on windy days when hiking or around town.
Sleeves with movement under the arms
The armholes are designed to be wide for ease of movement. By ensuring sufficient range of motion at the armpits (bottom) when raising your arms, you can move comfortably and without stress.
This design is made with outdoor use in mind, as it prevents the shirt from being pulled down and restrictive even when you need to move your arms widely, such as when taking something in and out of a backpack or using poles on a steep uphill slope.
The roomy armholes are also extremely convenient for layering. You can layer a variety of items, from light base layers to slightly thicker winter clothing, making this shirt useful for a wide range of seasons. Attention to detail in the design makes this shirt comfortable.
Folded stitch
All seams are made with a flat-felled stitch. A flat-felled stitch is a method of folding the edge of the fabric inward and sewing it together, resulting in a finished product where the edge of the fabric is not visible, as shown in the image above. This sewing method is characterized by its beautiful appearance and increased strength, as the seam is not exposed.
However, the folded-felled stitch is very time-consuming. It requires an extra step of folding the fabric, so sewing requires high skill and careful work. Nevertheless, we chose this method because we aimed for a strong, long-lasting finish.
Although using a serger to process seams is efficient, the exposed threads run the risk of becoming unraveled if they get caught on a fingernail, etc. Therefore, by using a folded-felled stitch, we can prevent such problems and improve durability.
Snap button
All buttons are made of resin snap buttons (YKK PLANCER®). This choice prevents problems such as buttons being lost due to thread breakage, which is common with regular sewn-on buttons. In addition, the structure of the snap button makes it easy to open and close, and it is easy to put on and take off frequently.
This type of button is also highly durable and can be used safely outdoors.
Hanger loop
The back yoke has a hanger loop, a traditional shirt detail that may not be used much in everyday life but is extremely useful when hiking.
For example, when taking a break at a tent site or on a trail, you can quickly hang your shirt on a branch or hook, which is a convenient feature unique to the outdoors. It can also be used to hang out a wet shirt or temporarily attach it to the outside of your pack.
As shown in the image above, you can store the main body in the hood and carry it around by tightening the string.

This product uses COOL DOTS®, a 4-way stretch material that has stretchability in both the vertical and horizontal directions. COOL DOTS® is a high-performance material made of 100% polyester with countless tiny air holes, developed by Komatsu Matere Co., Ltd. The features of this material are its excellent stretchability and breathability.
Its excellent stretchability allows it to flexibly accommodate any movement, reducing stress when worn. It naturally conforms to the movements of your body and keeps you comfortable, even during sudden movements on hikes or active scenes in daily life. In addition, the high breathability provided by the fine air holes prevents stuffiness even when worn for long periods of time, keeping you cool. You can stay comfortable even in the summer or when you are doing a lot of exercise.
Breathability and water repellency
This shirt has a special weaving method that creates countless tiny holes (micropores) in the fabric, providing excellent breathability. This technology allows air to flow efficiently from the inside of the shirt, reducing stuffiness and keeping you comfortable at all times.
In addition, the micro-hole design is designed to reduce the sense of transparency when worn. Usually, when focusing on breathability, the fabric becomes thin and the sense of transparency may become stronger, but this shirt balances visual security with functionality. It provides the breathability required for hiking and exercise without sacrificing both comfort and design.

Anti-static measures
A special discharge tape is sewn into the garment to suppress static electricity caused by electrical charging, which can easily occur with clothing made of thin synthetic fibers (such as nylon or polyester).

Discharge tape was developed as a measure to reduce the electrostatic charge that has adverse effects on the human body. Discharge tape does not prevent static electricity, but reduces the electrostatic charge by discharging, preventing the discomfort caused by static electricity.
Wearing it will not cause any problems to devices such as mobile phones and computers. Moreover, it has the effect of keeping pollen and dust away from the surrounding area while discharging.
The discharge tape is cut into 2cm chips and sewn into 4 places: 1) inside the cuffs of both sleeves, and 2) at the bottom of both sides. The discharge tape is not visible because it is sewn into the seam allowance.

The sketch is an image of the state of electrons when static electricity is generated when no discharge tape is used.
The fabric becomes negatively charged, and when it comes into contact with a positive charge in the air, a static electricity is generated with a "crack!".
The diagram below shows the case when discharge tape is used. The negative charges gather on the discharge tape and are neutralized with the positive charges in the air, instantly lowering the electrostatic charge on the fabric.

The factory that produces RIDGE MOUNTAIN GEAR shirts is Fashion Kobo Kuroishi Ltd.
Fashion Workshop Kuroishi is a factory located in Kuroishi City, Aomori Prefecture, with around 50 employees. It was established in 2003.
This factory specializes in sewing shirts, and produces about 60,000 shirts a year for well-known domestic manufacturers.
Each factory has its own characteristics, such as factories that specialize in shirts, factories that specialize in pants, and factories that specialize in cut and sew clothing.
As the saying goes, "let the experts do it," so we leave each item to the factories that specialize in it.
Conversely, they often point out things that we as a manufacturer have not noticed, which can lead to improved quality.
I love making things and of course I love making them myself, but I also love production sites like this.
Sometimes I get asked, "Does sewing in a factory mean that everything is done by machine?" But that's not the case. Even now, there are many steps that go into the final product, and many people are involved in each step.
President Watanabe-san is on the shop floor every day, working with his hands, operating the sewing machine and ironing.
On this day, we had the opportunity to chat briefly with them in between producing RIDGE MOUNTAIN GEAR products.
