A wide-fitting synthetic cotton 3-season sleeping bag for a relaxed sleep
What kind of three-season sleeping bag do we want?
In the harsh winter, a natural down sleeping bag is the only choice, but in the snow-free season when you go on a multi-day hike or stay under a tarp in a stream, you often get wet unexpectedly. And you need a sleeping bag that you can sleep in comfortably without feeling cramped.
While searching for a synthetic cotton that is resistant to moisture and has a strong fluffiness (i.e. compact), we searched for various materials and came across AIR FLAKE, which was born from analyzing down balls. Moreover, we are now able to use the newly developed 850FP AIR FLAKE.
The main body weighed 375g (Reg size), and it was a wide sleeping bag with a maximum width of 80cm.
Introducing a stress-free sleeping bag that is resistant to getting wet, has the minimum amount of heat retention, is compact and lightweight to carry, and allows you to relax and get a good night's sleep even in the mountains.
Uses AIR FLAKE's latest 850FP cotton
AIR FLAKE was created by analyzing the characteristics and shape of the feathers of eider ducks that live in the Arctic. Eiderdown, known as the jewel of feathers, is made up of very fine barbs radiating from a small soft core. Each barb intertwines with the others to form a fluffy, elastic fluff. It has a resilient volume that allows the fill power to be measured just like natural down.
AIR FLAKE has a single structure similar to down balls, so it does not feel out and even if it gets wet, it will return to its original volume when it dries, regaining its original heat retention. It is also highly durable to washing, with almost no change in volume even after repeated washing, and is odorless, making it comfortable to use. It is a next-generation material that combines the unique properties of natural down and synthetic cotton.
With the cooperation of a material manufacturer, we were able to use the latest 850FP material instead of the conventional 750FP AIR FLAKE. The lower half of the sleeping bag collapses, so we reduced the amount of cotton by 25% compared to the upper half to make it lighter.
The evolution of non-fluorine-based water-repellent finishes
The surface fabric is made of Greenbeads, a non-fluorine based super water repellent. Conventional non-fluorine based water repellents have the disadvantage that they are slightly inferior in performance and durability compared to fluorine based water repellents.
A choice had to be made between performance and environmental friendliness, but Greenbeads is a non-fluorine-based material that offers water-repellent properties far superior to C6 fluorine-based materials.
Since it is something to be used in the mountains, you will want it to be reused repeatedly, and if it is a synthetic cotton sleeping bag, you can easily wash it at home, so you will also want it to have a durable water-repellent surface.
The non-fluorine Greenbeads water repellent finish has a wash durability of 80 points (grade 3) after 100 washes, and is twice as abrasion resistant as C6 water repellent. Of course, it is an eco-friendly specification that uses only BSSL (Bluesign System Substance List) compliant chemicals.
The importance of using recycled materials
In the "life cycle of clothing," from sourcing raw materials to disposal after wearing, the process that produces the most CO2 emissions is the raw materials procurement process, which accounts for approximately 50% of the total. In other words, reducing CO2 emissions during raw materials procurement will greatly reduce the environmental impact of the "life cycle of clothing." In the case of pre-consumer recycled nylon (※), there are examples where CO2 emissions have been reduced by as much as 75%, so we believe that it is important to use recycled materials as much as possible and choose and wear such clothes.
*Pre-consumer recycled nylon:
This is a product made by recycling nylon cotton waste generated during the manufacture of nylon yarn, which was previously incinerated, into nylon yarn and fabric.
